Re:membering Europe – the empty pedestal and the space for Black belonging

Following the removal of various monuments commemorating colonial figures, this paper introduces Empty Plinth as epitomizing postcolonial Europe’s identity crisis. As Europe negotiates new discursive foundations for an increasingly multicultural society, argues a re-membering through materialization Black narratives in European memoryscape their potential to: 1) tackle white ignorance and exclusionary nativism by uncovering contingency upon other(ed) geographies, 2) contribute to creating/fostering sense place cities, 3) addressing crisis lay conceptual hybrid inclusive “Europe.”
